How to Identify Bus Bodywork
Bodywork is what you actually see - the outer shell, windows, and styling. Here's how to identify the main UK body manufacturers and their distinctive designs.
Body vs chassis - quick recap
The chassis is the mechanical platform (engine, gearbox, frame). The body is the passenger-carrying structure built on top. Some buses are "integral" where body and chassis are designed together; others are "body-on-chassis" combinations.
Major UK body manufacturers
- Wrightbus - Northern Ireland-based, known for Gemini, StreetDeck, StreetLite
- Alexander Dennis (ADL) - Scottish, produces Enviro series (often integral)
- Optare - Yorkshire-based, known for Solo, Versa, MetroCity
- Plaxton - Part of ADL group, mainly coaches but some bus bodies
- MCV - Egyptian company with UK presence, Evolution body
Wrightbus spotting cues
Wright bodies have evolved over the years, but common features include:
- Gemini: Distinctive peaked front dome, often with a "W" shaped upper deck front window line
- StreetDeck: Smoother, more modern front with integrated headlights
- StreetLite: Compact single decker with rounded styling
- Eclipse: Single deck body often seen on Volvo chassis
- Look for the "Wrightbus" badge, usually near the front door or on the rear
Alexander Dennis (ADL) spotting cues
ADL Enviro bodies have their own distinctive look:
- Enviro400: Angular front design, prominent headlight clusters, often with route number display in a black surround
- Enviro400 MMC: Updated ("Major Model Change") with sleeker styling
- Enviro200: Common single decker with distinctive front grille pattern
- Enviro400 City: TfL specification with flat front for London
- Look for "Alexander Dennis" or "ADL" badges
Optare spotting cues
Optare designs tend to have a distinctive, often curvy appearance:
- Solo: Small, rounded minibus with very distinctive bug-eyed headlights
- Versa: Mid-sized single decker with smooth curves
- MetroCity: Full-sized single decker with modern styling
- MetroDecker: Double decker with unique curved front (relatively rare)
- Optare badges are usually on the front or rear
Other bodies you might see
- East Lancs / Darwen: Older bodies, company closed 2012, still see Vyking, Myllennium, etc.
- Plaxton: Centro (single deck), President (older double deck)
- Northern Counties: Older manufacturer, distinctive Palatine double deckers
- MCV: Evolution body, often on Volvo chassis
- Caetano: Portuguese, some UK coach/bus bodies
Quick identification tips
- Check for badges - Most bodies have manufacturer badges near the doors or at the rear
- Look at the front - Headlight shape, windscreen angle, and grille pattern are distinctive
- Window shapes - Upper deck window patterns vary between manufacturers
- Rear end - Engine grille position, light clusters, emergency exit shape

When you're not sure
Body identification can be tricky, especially with older or refurbished vehicles. If you're unsure:
- Upload clear photos (front, side, rear)
- Note any visible badges or lettering
- Check fleet lists for the operator
- Leave the field blank rather than guessing
BusOva tip
A clear front three-quarter photo is often the most useful for body identification. If you can capture any manufacturer badges, that's even better.
